A high-fat, low-carb nutrition regime known as the ketogenic diet significantly reduces the cognitive effects of brain injury in mice, and may do the same for humans, according to Israeli scientists.The ketogenic diet is already used to help some epileptic children. Researchers at Tel Aviv University started probing possible benefits after brain injury, reporting their findings in the peer-reviewed journal [Links nur für registrierte Nutzer]
They found that more than 50 percent of the cognitive function lost by brain-injured mice was restored after the mice were on the ketogenic diet for two months, while in a control group of brain-injured mice on a regular diet, cognitive function didn’t improve.
Man hat also bei Mäusen festgestellt, dass deren Hirnfunktion nach fetthaltiger Nahrung mit wenig Kohlenhydraten zugenommen hat.
